These “still lifes” are an extension of Valérie Belin’s Interiors series (2011). Unlike that series, however, the artist, who was no doubt haunted by the collector’s spirit, constitutes her own subject here, the better to master the composition. These photographs fully assert their identity as in the vanitas and memento mori (“remember that you must die”) genre; they position themselves in this long pictorial and, later, photographic tradition. They are contemporary still lifes by virtue of the objects chosen to compose them – mass consumption items — and the materials, mainly plastic, from which they are made.
