This series comprises six works whose names – Ananké, Aura, Electra, Ishtar, Junita and Saffron – are those of both mythological goddesses and television characters. These divinities are represented by six photographs of fibreglass shop mannequins chosen by the artist from the catalogue of producer Adel Rootstein’s “realistic collections.” The works were made using the artist’s customary technique of “sublimation,” and in this particular instance by superimposing a geometrical pattern made using vectorial components over the image of the mannequin. In her use of this artifice, which acts as a play of mirrors that seems to multiply the image ad infinitum, Belin’s aim is not so much to make the inanimate come alive, as to “sap the cliché from within” by taking its power and its exacerbating effect to extremes, the better to bring out its reality.
