In this series Valérie Belin endeavours to show us places cluttered with objects and inhabited by the obsession with “collection.” The photographs were taken in interiors where the proliferation of the items appears boundless. Powerfully evocative homogenous objects have been accumulated, producing an implicit portrait of the inhabitant. These “interior scenes” draw us into the private world of the person who has orchestrated them, burying their living space beneath a flood of objects whose accumulation dissolves any aesthetical or functional logic. However, the expressiveness of the image is not only related to the obsessive repetition of a theme, for the artist uses artefacts that accentuate the morbid potential of “collections.” This is the effect of the solarisation of the images which inverts the light sources into patches of darkness and places us in an altered reality, with no connection to an external reality.
