The Masks are a series of portraits, as are the Models I (2001), the Mannequins (2003) and the lookalikes (2005). However, where the mannequins gave the impression of “reality” the better to reveal “falseness,” these masks, which are photographed in an extremely realist way, do not create any illusions. Here, the initial impression is one of grotesqueness and factitiousness, and yet the physiognomy that these masks project does nevertheless have a certain lifelike quality: one could almost say that the grotesque becomes reality here.
