In this series of Michael Jackson lookalikes Valérie Belin specifically addresses the theme of the simulacrum. The people photographed here want to be considered lookalikes of the American pop singer. And yet the very nature of their model undermines this exercise in resemblance: himself an eminently protean figure, a master of transformation and appearance, Michael Jackson is, in a way, no more than a copy of himself. Thus, by photographing imitations of the singer, Belin is pointing to the vertigo of representation in which true and false, and the authentic and its reproduction, are inextricably intertwined. A genuine mise-en-abyme of the photographic process and its power of infinite duplication, this ensemble, in which the artist deals with the grotesque for the first time, invites us to reflect on the emptiness and absence at the heart of all images.
