Valérie Belin presents a new photography series entitled “Cover Girls.” This series includes eight portraits of young women photographed in a studio, as if for a magazine cover. The young women, models, were chosen for their flawless, flawless beauty. Each of them, as a fictional character, could be a top model, a celebrity, or an artist. The photographs were taken in a neutral manner—not to highlight the models' personalities, but rather to emphasize their timeless plasticity through the pose. The final image is a photomontage featuring a close-up of the face and an assemblage of paper cutouts from various magazines, appearing superimposed—a typically photographic and cinematic technique. The resulting image presents itself as an "icono-typo-photographic" palimpsest, as if the elements had been recorded multiple times on the same medium—"a palimpsest that refers to that of our own existence, where several layers of meaning, stories, and 'mediated' narratives are deposited and intertwined, shaping our perception of the world and ourselves."
