Seeking to look beyond the adventitious nature of form to the heart of things, Valérie Belin began by focusing on photographing objects that were transparent (glass) or reflective (silverware, mirrors). The main concern was the objects’ materiality. The artist establishes a kind of symbiosis between the purely luminous essence of the objects and the nature of the photographic medium itself. Consequently, the photographs are less photographs of objects than images of their luminous spectrum, capturing on the sensitive surface the light reflected back by their body.
