This series is comprised of seven large format, black-and-white photographs.  Its title is inspired by the movie industry term that referred to the image (usually a portrait of a young woman posing next to a greyscale) that was inserted in the lead-in to a film before copies were made. The young women depicted in the photographs appear as though they have this secondary role of "China Girl" actresses. Elegantly dressed, like contemporary geishas, the young women kneel in the middle of a dense décor full of various oddities, porcelain objects, fake antiquities, bowls filled with flowers and fruit...

Superimpositions of motifs create rich landscapes that reference the backgrounds of old master, Renaissance paintings. These backgrounds, providing a decorative backdrop, also reflect the model's psychology.  The different planes of the image are blurred through matte painting and overprint techniques, thus creating a sensory and material illusion of scenery.
