These transsexuals were photographed at the beginning of their transition, at that precise moment when masculine and feminine are crystallised in the face in an effect of morphing that makes sexual identity seem like a virtual notion. Each of these portraits appears, indeed, to be the abstract result of a collage of particularly groomed female elements like the eyes, the mouth and the hair, and masculine elements such as the strong bone structure of the face and occasional growths of hair. While these faces have a powerful fantasy quality, the way they are photographed is clinical. There are no spectacular effects in these photographs; on the contrary, they exude a sense of abstraction that contrasts strongly with the subject. If identity is the issue here, then it is identity at its most imperceptible.
