These photographs of black women chosen for their singular, sculptural beauty, seem to displace their subject into a purely abstract and cultural field in which the photogenic qualities of the faces generate an effect superior to the one they would produce when shown as they are naturally. As if the photograph was genuinely constituted by this skin which is at once dark and luminous, by this contrast of black and white, by this flat and perfect symmetry. Like photographic sculptures evoking African art, these “face objects” are also fashioned by fantasy; they partake of a certain existential ambiguity through the notion of the mask, and also reaffirm that “dark light,” the original light in the work of the artist.
