Valérie Belin’ first photographic researches into the problematic of the “body” explored the theme of dresses. As a kind of metaphor of absence, the dress forms a husk, a chrysalis of fabric still filled out by an erstwhile presence, becoming an image of the body itself. The work thus tends to become a meeting point between two opposites, almost seeking to merge them by transforming empty into full and nothing into presence, and conjuring up, through these tired and now disused bits of fabric, other stories – the creation of haute couture artefacts, of a museum collection, of a fiction.
