These photographs of animal carcasses are the first manifestations of illusion and, albeit analogically, of the human figure in Valérie Belin’s work. They vividly recall the human body by their formal similarities with anatomical studies and the traditional image of the écorché. The artist plays on the illusion of what these surrogate human bodies could be, thereby introducing the body-object and death-life dichotomies into the work. Injecting dynamism into the composition, she muddies the distinction between what is dead and what is alive; what has undergone death seems to come back to life. The use of black-and-white heightens the illusoriness of these images.
