This series was made on the occasion of the exhibition Correspondances : Belin / Manet at the Musée d’Orsay. Here, the “correspondence” with the work of Édouard Manet goes beyond the simple play of formal analogy and iconographic parallels. As Valérie Belin explained, what interested her about Manet was partly his attitude to the real, his sustained attentiveness to the silent presence of things, without idealism or excessive literalness, qualities that are particularly evident and undiluted in his still lifes. Thanks to the Caravaggesque play of light and colour, which she saturates and electrifies, these purely decorative, industrial baskets of fruit are shown as objects that have lost their original value: is this food or a set of factitious objects?
