The Bodybuilders mark the first explicit appearance of the human figure in Valérie Belin’s work, and can be considered as an extension of a series of works – glass objects, dresses, wrecked cars – whose subject could be read as an ethnographic study. In this series, it is the plasticity of the body that is shown, the way it can be manipulated, transformed and even deformed. At the border between human body and object for exhibition, these flesh-and-blood beings evoke a form of self-alienation through a corporeal practice shaped by the media in which the photogenic becomes monstrous.
